Memories

Do you ever get the whiff of a lingering smell that takes you back to a place in time. Maybe you flash to when you were 16 and you were on top of the world. Naive but learning. Open minded about certain things and clueless about others. You thought you had everything figured out until you found out that you didn't. You knew nothing other than what you had experienced and couldn't see 3 seconds down the road let alone 3 years. Could you even picture everything as it turned out?

Or seeing a certain car that used to make you excited. Now every time you see it, you have a sudden urge to crush that certain someone's prized possession. (Haha but you wont actually crush it because that would just be rude and a little psycho right?)

Or do you ever drive past a place where you can still remember what song was playing on the radio or the exact tone of someone's voice when they were talking while passing that exact place at a different time, when you lived in a different world.

The song comes on that you once danced barefoot in a parking lot to. You remember the stupid grin on your face right when you were twirling in the lilac dress that now is on a hanger in the back of your closet because it just doesn't fit you right anymore.

You are now singing the same words that used to mean the beginning of summer and the sound of waves crashing when you were 15 and couldn't wait to be driving yourself down PCH in the middle of June with your best friend in the passenger seat. You didn't know what you wanted in life, but that care didn't even cross your mind. You were too busy yelling "YOU SHOOK ME ALL NIGHT LONG" into a brush at the top of your lungs in between laughs with the sun roof open.

You happen to throw on an old outfit that someone has engrained into their own memory because you were also wearing it when you happened to meet them for the first time over a game of pool in the basement of your parents house. You never knew that people remembered things like the fact that you were wearing a Free People shirt with your favorite True Religion jeans.

Or the sweatshirt that you took and never gave back that you swore to never get out of for 3 days straight until it finally started to fray on your body.

Or a certain number comes up over and over again and you are reminded of someone or some time when that number meant only good things in your life. You loved that number and when asked your favorite number, you lied and said 88 instead of 19 because you thought in the back of your mind that it was okay to change your favorite for someone.

There are so many things that you don't even give a second thought to on a day to day basis. But when you are reminded of these minuet memories: you are taken right back to that same place where you were however long ago, with whomever you may have been with, doing whatever you may have been doing. It doesn't matter whether or not you block them or want them to come back, they have a mind of their own. They come and go as they please.

A song by A Fine Frenzy says:
"
Just to put your mind at ease
You don't owe me anything
You paid me well in memories.
And I think of you
Whenever life gets me down
And I think of you
Whenever you're not around
And you rest your bones
Far from my arms
But you still pull me home
"
